Vintage Karabagh Rug

$1,800.00

Handmade wool rug.

Karabaghs come from the disputed mountainous land between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The word 'Karabagh' means black garden. These types of Karabagh were woven primarily in the 1960s during the Soviet occupation. Twisting traditional motifs with the weavers imagination they are completely unique-- each made as dowry pieces and for personal use, rather than as production rugs. They are characterized by offbeat geometric or floral designs and wild color combinations, outlined in black or on a black background- a color that is not traditionally used in rugs from this area.
